Now I’m not saying that is the only cause of these conditions, but the addition of magnesium-containing foods and supplements does help to correct the underlying mineral imbalance to alleviate the symptoms.

Magnesium is an essential mineral for staying healthy and is required for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Multiple health benefits of magnesium include transmission of nerve impulses, body temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth by aiding the absorption of calcium by the body. This amazing mineral also improves muscle functioning (recovery from exercise), reduces muscle cramps, prevents osteoporosis, reduces the risk of heart attacks, hypertension, migraines, kidney stones, and gallstones!

How does magnesium insufficiency/deficiency come about? Well, as addressed in a previous article “Supplements – are they necessary?“, most of us don’t eat enough vitamin & mineral-containing foods, the soils are deficient and our highly stressful 21st century life means our adrenal glands and cells burn through the little we have to keep us going.

Good dietary sources of magnesium include nuts (especially almonds), whole grains, wheat germ, fish, and green leafy vegetables. As with most nutrients, daily needs for magnesium cannot be met from food alone which is why magnesium dietary supplements are recommended as well.

Another good way to get more magnesium on board is through Epsom Salt baths, so that it is absorbed directly through the skin and topically with a Magnesium Oil spray, especially if you are prone to muscular cramps.

The top five health benefits of magnesium are:

1) Magnesium may reverse osteoporosis – multiple research studies conducted have suggested that calcium supplemented with magnesium improves bone mineral density.

2) Magnesium helps prevent cardiovascular diseases – one of the most important benefits of magnesium is that it is associated with lowering the risk of coronary heart diseases.

3) Magnesium helps to regulate high blood pressure (Hypertension) – playing a key role in regulating and lowering blood pressure naturally.

4) Magnesium reduces the risk of becoming diabetic – studies show that individuals with a magnesium deficiency have a higher risk of developing type-2 diabetes and severe diabetic retinopathy.

5) Magnesium is also used in the treatment of migraines, insomnia, and symptoms of depression – amongst numerous other health benefits.

N.B: If on any medication please check with your GP for any possible interactions before supplementing with magnesium.
